Description

Drylaw neighbourhood centre is under new management! We have more than doubled the number of people coming through the doors in the last three months and are also now focussing on what more we can offer our community.

Something we would love to do is get local people, who wouldn’t normally cycle, on bikes and we are well positioned next to North Edinburgh Path Network and Drylaw Park.

We will welcome parents with small children, women and people living with a disability, mobility issue or health conditions. To engage with local people, we will spread news of the scheme on social and local media, share with the local primary schools and we have two new toddlers’ groups coming in to the centre regularly.

We would also like to offer training for adults who are learning to or returning to cycling and led rides for people who need a bit of support to get started.

In order to get the scheme up and running we are asking for funding to buy 4 e-bikes, 4 regular bikes, 4 children’s trailers and 4 children’s bikes, in differing sizes and one adult tricycle.

People living locally tell us they are worried about having bikes stolen from their homes and gardens. We will have secure storage for people unable to store bikes overnight.

As Drylaw is an area where many individuals live on a low income, often people simply can’t afford to buy bikes for themselves or their children. This can result in children not learning to ride a bike, an important life skill, particularly in a time of climate crisis.

We believe this bike scheme can help local people, especially parents and guardians supported by centre staff and volunteers, learn to love cycling and encourage their children to and establish good habits for life.

Living in Drylaw and Telford allows safe off-road access to many other areas including Leith, the New Town, and also the Forth Shore including Granton, Newhaven, Wardie Bay, Silverknowes and Cramond. Great for days out and creating memories for all ages.
