Project Summary

Project Description

Every single bit of plastic ever made, still exists - we have to do more to reduce the demand and the impact plastic is having on our planet, and that starts at home, in our local community.   Edinburgh Beach Volleyball Club want to use our sport of beach volleyball and the platform we have as a popular community organisation to reduce the impact that plastic waste has on our environment and local wildlife.  We will do this by instiling a culture across the club and local community where our members (junior and senior) and local residents are responsible for and take ownership of our club environment and its surroundings, threading this mindset and approach throughout everything we do.

What we want to do:

Build a specialist marketing campaign to promote within and beyond our club that aims to empower members, local residents and visitors to the beach, to change their behaviours and attitudes towards the unecessary and careless use of plastics in their day to day, beyond the duration of the campaign.

With our great relationships with local schools we also want to combine beach volleyball with an education programme for local schools with young people becoming leaders and influencers in this area for their local community; influencing behaviours and standards for this in their own home, at their own school, on their own streets and across the city.  We hope this will also make our club and our sport more relevant to people who wouldnt normally consider beach volleyball as an opportunity, supporting us to include more people in our sport, showing that our club is a place for everyone, not just volleyball enthusiasts.

WHO - we will work with:   local residents, club members, local young people WHAT - we will do: educate and promote the importance of reducing plastic waste and everyday methods to change daily habits using beach volleyball as a vehicle WHY - Reduce the impact that plastic waste is having on our planet and increase the profile of this problem.

Monitor and Evaluate - We will monitor and evaluate the success of the project by putting simple measures in place to asses peoples attitudes and behaviours before and throughout the project duration.  This will help us adapt as necessary and make the most of the opportunity.

Location: Portobello Beach

Proposed on behalf of: Edinburgh Beach Volleyball Club are a community based club for local people to take part in sport and physical activity; providing a safe, inclusive and welcoming opportunity for local people to enjoy the beautiful outdoors in a sociable and engaging environment. The club are committed to the Changing Lives through Sport Agenda and work with local schools and community groups across Edinburgh to help reduce barriers to participation in sport using volleyball as a tool to do that; as well as creating a very person centred approach to what we deliver on the sand. We want to use this platform to make a difference to the lives of local people and the environement.
