Grow Your Own is a pilot grant scheme provided by the City of Edinburgh Council. Its purpose is to support new community food growing projects based in Edinburgh. Grants of up to £5,000 will be awarded to constituted voluntary and community groups across the city to support new projects in publicly accessible spaces.  A total of £50,000 will be awarded. 

Possible project topics include: 

  • Creation and development of community food growing projects 
  • Creation of community garden kitchens 
  • Supporting food waste reduction and reuse of materials in communities 
  • Education around urban food growing 

Applications are made online through the Your Voice platform to the Edinburgh Grow Your Own Fund and application form and supplementary documentation to thrivinggreenspaces@edinburgh.gov.uk.

What can you apply for?

We are looking for the projects aimed at the creation and development of community food growing in Edinburgh. For example, the funding can cover:

  • Seeds, plants, and tools
  • Equipment for community garden cooking areas
  • Education and training around urban food growing
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Staff time which is directly related to the establishment of the growing area
  • Construction related to facilities and accessibility (e.g., new ramps, raised bed planters) for the growing space

Applications are made online through the Your Voice platform to make them available for the public, and to make the process more transparent. Confidential data such as names and bank account details (as asked for in Application Part 2) are to be sent separately to the Thriving Greenspaces Team at thrivinggreenspaces@edinburgh.gov.uk.

How to apply:

  • Read the application guidance and download Application Part 1 and 2.
  • To apply, sign in to Your Voice with MyAccount
  • Once logged on click “Submit an application".  Fill in the online form, and attach your completed Application Part 1 proposal under the “Documents” section.
  • Email the completed Application Part 2 section and other required documents (such as your constitution) to the Thriving Greenspaces team at thrivinggreenspaces@edinburgh.gov.uk before 12 noon 12 May 2025.

Thank you to everyone who applied to the Grow Your Own initiative. Applications are now closed.

Our officers are currently reviewing submissions to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria. If needed, applicants may be contacted for additional information about their projects.

Next, the review panel will evaluate the applications, with decisions expected to be announced by mid-June.
